Personally, I feel 2019 is filled with magic, wonder, excitement and a lot of incredible growth! I am soooooo excited! From a numerology perspective, 2019 is what they call a ‘3 year’ which means good things are on the horizon… Yay! I have decided therefore, to gift you 3 Steps to guide you in beginning this new, amazing year ahead.
Each new year, I speak to envisioning and creating the best year for yourself. The end of a year/ beginning of a new year is such an interesting time, as everyone is in this state of panic- not only is it nearly Christmas, but the year is almost at an end, and potentially the list of New Years Resolutions has not quite been completed- if at all. Suddenly, there begins the creation of elaborate new resolutions, that usually revolve around exercise and weight-loss. My view on resolutions and creating a wondrous new year (and life) for yourself, is instead, to create a vision of the person or life you wish to become or have.
This leads me to….
Step 1 – Dream big and brainstorm all you’d love to experience
By getting in now (a little early), we can spend some time envisioning the coming year and how you want your year to turn out. That way, you actually BEGIN the year prepared, with your beautiful vision in mind, ready to go!
Right now, you have just over 2 weeks to contemplate your year ahead… Start thinking and holding a vision now about how you want next year to unfold. Create a space for yourself (yes even in this chaotic time of year- this is important!), and begin to brainstorm in a relaxed way… What do you want to experience? What would you like to accomplish? Who/ what kind of person do you want to be? Be as creative and adventurous as your heart desires…. You may list words or statements- whatever flows for you.
Step 2 – Choose 3 power words
With your brainstorming page(s) at hand, put the various words/ statements you have written into 3 main categories/ headings (as best as possible). From this, you will be able to create 3 Power Words to focus on. These don’t have to be your only focus. Just decide the three most important things that you want to accomplish, and that will leave you feeling super connected, empowered, transformed, fulfilled and, well, let’s face it- happy- at the end of 2019, once these words become your reality.
These words can be related to any area of your life- your own personal growth, and/or perhaps involve a permanent, positive change in habit, the creation of something new… whatever you envision that will make the greatest growth and difference for you.
On this note however, as I mentioned above; one of my greatest concerns around “New Years Resolutions”, is that people frequently focus on changing or ceasing habit and behaviours, that usually require giving up something you enjoy or pressuring you into achieving potentially unrealistic outcomes; which in turn, result in eventual failure and subsequent self-depreciation, overwhelm and guilt. An example might be; “I want to lose weight” (which essentially means I need to give up sugar, carbs, alcohol, anything yummy (maybe even try one of those fad lemon cleanses); and exercise daily; while running a house-hold, working and trying to maintain some sort of social life. This sounds exhausting, stressful, overwhelming, and honestly, most likely (without serious planning, preparation and organisation) unachievable.
A potentially better resolution is “I want to be fit and healthy”. This helps you to make better choices in that rather than having strict rules about what you need to do to “lose weight”, the mindset is more positive in that you can ask yourself “will this behaviour help me to feel fit and health?”- the pressure is less intense. If you do it anyway and it’s not, the choice is a conscious one and you deal with it, learn from it and grow from it, working out how to make a better choice next time.
The concept of Power Words has another focus… Rather than looking at your resolution “I want to be fit and healthy” as behaviours you need to “do” to achieve it; by having a ‘Power Word’, “HEALTHY” for example… you BE healthy! As in you live and come from a ‘space’ of health, and the focus and mindset is different again… From this space- from coming from a space of BEING (not DOING) healthy, you are living healthy, actually FEELING it from within. When it comes to making a choice on a particular behaviour or response to a situation, it’s coming from that space, and so it is almost no longer a choice… it is simply a response to a situation that resonates from that space you are coming from, in alignment with your vision and the person you wish to be and become.
With all this in mind, once you’ve decided what your 3 Power Words are to be, make sure that you write them down. This is important! Keep them close at hand, so you stay focused. Earlier this year, when I did this exercise with friends and clients, I had people carve them into a candle, so they could burn the candle every day or week (whatever works), as a visual reminder of the focus for the year.
Through conscious connection to, and awareness of self- in the wholeness of who you are and with the vision of who you wish to be- you begin to start living your life with value, purpose, meaning- loving, nurturing, honouring and respecting yourself. You are able to create change through cultivating space for yourself to grow; rather than experiencing resistance through introducing and following (potentially) strict rules, and berating yourself when you aren’t able to follow them.
Step 3 – Plan and watch the magic unfold
Your third and final step is, using the planner, to write down in the 1st 3-month box, at least 1 activity for each Power Word that you intend to commence/ accomplish during that 90 day period. For instance, you may choose to have “Nurturing” as your Power Word. From January-March, you may choose to begin daily walks, or daily meditation or daily cups of tea in the sunshine. Use just one of those. Then repeat this process for the next 2 power words.
Now pause for a moment and take a look at your Power Words and what you have written. This represents your clear intention for the 2019 of your dreams. Notice how you feel. Do you feel more connected? More grounded? More centered? More confident? Pay attention to the positive energy that this simple exercise produces in your experience. It produces that effect because you are feeling more focussed and more in control of your life. Hopefully, you are also feeling very excited!
The extent to which you take control of your life is the extent to which you will feel happier and more stress-free. It’s a great antidote to fear, uncertainty, and anxiety about the future.
Remember, to set a date and time at the end of each of the 90-day periods to repeat this for the next 3 months.
