Through the journey I undertake with my clients toward a state of consciousness, connection, wellness and fulfilment, I often (and by often, I mean always!!) recommend the practice of mindfulness-based meditation as a place to start. This is for a number of reasons, one of which, from a psychological perspective, is due to the physiological impact the practice of meditation has on the brain & body in the process of the stress response; through the introduction of the “relaxation response”. This in turn has numerous benefits to the ongoing awareness, progress and development that will be experienced throughout their journey.   Frequently, however, I have conversations with clients around how they want to (and know they “should”- there’s that pesky little word) meditate, but they “don’t have the time”. The concept of meditation and the practice of meditation becomes a “chore” and the limiting beliefs and mindsets ensue.

We are living in a time fraught with “busy-ess”- our bodies and minds do not stop, because even in the safety of our own homes, we are plagued by technology- by the internet,  TV, constant emails, phone calls, text messages and of course… facebook. There are no right or wrong ways to be living your life, so long as you are experiencing your life filled with value and meaning, with a sense of purpose and direction. If this is not the case for you, there is likely something that you would like to change. Developing an awareness and consciousness in where you are investing your time and energy is so powerful… Are your choices value-driven? Are they enhancing your life? Are they bringing you a sense of fulfilment?

So when I speak to the power of a practice of mindful meditation, remember the power of your words and your mind. Rather than labelling meditation- or any other conscious growth-based practices you may choose to incorporate into your life- as a “chore” and “’something else” you need to do in your day… consider it a GIFT to yourself… Coming from a place and space of love and value for self- an experience in the process the development of your self-love and self-care. Being able to consciously step into that space completely for you; to open your heart and mind to a space of just “being”… allowing the thoughts, stressors and pressures to move through you; to sit in a space so completely consciously connected to self, in that precise moment… complete, whole and fulfilled. Present.
